5 Minutes With a Fundraiser: Let Lew

OneTwoSix Hair Studio Owner, and Affinage Colour Rebel, Let Lew, really threw himself into the Helping Hairdressers Day spirit by doing something just incredible. We thought it was about time we had a catch up about all his fundraising efforts.

What inspired you to get involved with Helping Hairdressers Day?
I came across The Hairdressers’ Charity about a month ago and wanted to try and help. One of the biggest reasons for this is to help people like my partner who is a self-employed hairdresser, who had a heart attack a few years ago. He had no one to turn to and couldn’t get help. We got through it together but it was a very hard time. I understand how hard it is when you feel there is no light shining.

What ways did you fundraise?
We offered customers doughnuts with their coffee for just a little donation. I also wanted to try and boost our fundraising by doing something out of the ordinary so I shaved my hair live on Facebook! It let my friends and people I know learn about the charity.

How successful was your fundraiser?
I set up a Just Giving page and in just 5 days we raised £544 in the salon, and £260 on the Just Giving page. Friends and customers were very supportive and donated generously!

Do you have any plans for future events?
I would love to be able to support The Hairdressers’ Charity as much as I can and join my fellow work family if there is anything we can do to fundraise.

What do you love about fundraising?
Nothing is worse than not having anyone to turn to, it makes you feel hopeless. I love fundraising for this charity as it helps people in my industry and leads fellow hairdressers into a brighter place. It is worth all my efforts and makes me very happy!

What was your highlight on Helping Hairdressers Day?
My highlight has been seeing the amount of support I’ve had from friends and customers. My salon team have been so generous and gave their day’s tips as a donation – I’m very lucky to have such a great team! Of course my hair shaving adventure too! I certainly didn’t have the courage before, but I am willing to sacrifice my hair for a few months for Helping Hairdressers in Need!

What are your top tips for a successful fundraiser?
My tip is to stick to what you believe is the right thing to do. If you are passionate about the fundraising campaign people can feel it and are influenced by this.
